Some guidance is given here as to the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations. These regulations provide that there is a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with these regulations to ensure that no danger arises from the use of such equipment. Effectively this requires implementation of a systematic and regular programme of maintenance inspection and testing.

The 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act places an obligation in the following circumstances;

Where appliance are used by employees.

Where the public may use such appliances in schools hospitals hotels shops etc.

Where appliances are serviced or repaired.
