Fire Extinguishers.
Fire extinguishers are one of the most recognisable and essential pieces of fire safety equipment. Often acting as the first line of defence in the event of a fire, they play a vital role in protecting lives and property.
At Westcountry Fire Protection, we’ll help you identify the correct types of extinguishers for your premises, whether through a new supply, part of a comprehensive fire risk assessment, or by taking over the maintenance of existing systems, even if we didn’t install them ourselves. You can count on us for reliable, ongoing service you can trust.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, every property must be equipped with fire extinguishers. As a general rule, there should be at least two Class A fire extinguishers per floor, clearly visible and easily accessible at all times. The Complete Extinguisher Service.

Fire Extinguishers and Fire Types
Fire extinguishers come in various types, each designed to handle specific fire classes. It is crucial to ensure that the extinguishers used meet the current British Standards (BS EN3). These extinguishers typically feature a red body (RAL 3000) with an agent-specific colour band, which covers between 5-10% of the surface area. This colour band indicates the contents of the extinguisher and ensures proper usage for different fire types.
When selecting the most suitable fire extinguisher for your premises, a fire risk assessment is the safest and most reliable approach. It helps identify potential fire hazards on-site, allowing you to determine exactly which type of extinguisher is needed to address those specific risks in the event of a fire.
Fire extinguishers come in various sizes, each suited for different environments. While some are designed for commercial use, fire extinguishers are equally important in homes, caravans, cars, boats, and other places where fire presents a potential danger.

Water Extinguishers: Effective for Class A fires, which involve solid combustibles like wood, paper, or textiles. These extinguishers are unsuitable for fires involving flammable liquids or electrical hazards.
AFFF Foam Extinguishers: Versatile and suitable for both Class A and Class B fires. The foaming agent helps to prevent re-ignition and is effective for fires involving flammable liquids.
CO2 Extinguishers: Ideal for fires involving electrical equipment. CO2 is non-conductive and leaves no harmful residue, making it a safe choice for electrical fires.
Dry Powder Extinguishers: Suitable for Class A, B, C, and electrical fires. However, they are not recommended for indoor use due to the risk of inhalation. Dry powder can also obscure vision and cause damage to goods and machinery.
Wet Chemical Extinguishers: Specifically designed for fires involving cooking fats and oils (Class F). These are most commonly used in kitchens and restaurants, and typically also carry a Class A rating for solid combustibles.
